Donn Fisher: Encouragement In Ministry Through Higher Education

July 8, 2020 by Josh Luecht

Pastor Donn Fisher’s journey to Christ allegedly began at a young age. His parents would say that he gave his life to Christ when he was 5 years old at a Lutheran church children’s event …but he doesn’t remember that all. What he does remember is growing up as a pastor’s kid in the Evangelical Free denomination. As the oldest of four kids moving around from small church to small church with their dad, Donn knew enough about Christianity to talk the talk and keep up appearances. It felt like he was always at church, but Donn had no real relationship with Jesus. He was living two different lives….until Jesus got a hold of him as a young adult.

Donn began his educational journey as a music education major, he quickly realized that was not for him and dropped out after two years. He decided to change his goals and focused on finding a Bible College to attend. Because there were not really any great options in New England for Biblical schooling, Donn narrowed his focus down two schools. Moody Bible Institute in Chicago and Calvary Chapel Bible College in Twin Peaks.

At the time, there was not a Calvary Chapel presence in New England, but Donn had heard the teachings of Chuck Smith on the radio and enjoyed the verse by verse teaching. With that in mind, Donn attended CCBC Twin Peaks and earned his Associates degree.

After his time in California Donn became the Senior Pastor of a small unaffiliated church in 2000 called Agape Chapel. In 2012 Donn led the church through the affiliation process with Calvary Chapel, renaming the church Calvary Chapel Raynham.

Consumed with pastoring and ministry, Donn didn’t think about school again for about 15 years. In 2017 he began to consider completing a Bachelor degree, but he didn’t know where to turn… then one day while scrolling through social media, Donn discovered Calvary Chapel University.

Donn loved the fact that CCU would line up with his philosophy of ministry and that he could complete his degree at his own pace, without having to sacrifice ministry opportunities.

“I thoroughly enjoyed my studies…I was not sure that I would, since it had been so long since I had taken classes in any setting. The professors were professional, and the interaction with fellow students online, was a huge part of what made the classes special as well.”

In 2017 Donn earned his B.A in Biblical Studies. Having had such a great learning experience with CCU Donn chose to continue his education and in 2019 earned a M.A. in Biblical Leadership.

One of the things that Donn really enjoyed about his time with Calvary Chapel University was the opportunity to take everything he learned each week and immediately apply it to the ministry at hand. For example, during his M.A studies, Calvary Chapel Raynham was going through some leadership restructuring and Donn found his course work essential in helping him think through leadership goals and vision casting for the church.

In fact, Donn’s experience was so great with CCU that his daughter is enrolling in CCU’s Biblical Counseling program this fall, as she prepares for the mission field.

What would Donn say to pastors considering enrolling at Calvary Chapel University?

“My encouragement to anyone considering CCU….do it! The Lord will see you through every hesitation, and you will find a support system of like-minded pastors, professors, and students”

Bobby Johnston: God’s Restoration And Grace Through Higher Education

May 2, 2020 by Josh Luecht

Bobby Johnston thought his higher education “career” was over before it ever really even began. After a year and a half of community college he had only earned 5 credits because his addiction was consuming his life and his life circumstances were changing. Because of these roadblocks, education really ended up on the back burner.

After 20 years of struggling with addiction Bobby finally confessed his struggles to his loved ones and the Lord began to take a hold of his life! “A family member took me to U-turn for Christ where I gave my life to the Lord. I fell in love with Jesus and His grace and compassion. My life was completely changed!” Getting involved in U-turn For Christ led to rehabilitation and a radical transformation in Bobby’s life.

After graduating from U-turn For Christ in 2009, Bobby began to look for ways that he could be used by the Lord to help others.

“I have a passion for teaching God’s Word…I know better than anyone the bondage I was in and to be freed from that….it’s truly an act of God’s grace! Therefore my life belongs to Him!”

He became involved at his church, Reliance Church Temecula, California, serving in Jr. High ministry and starting a home Bible study. A huge part of his ministry involves serving others who are struggling with addiction in recovery ministries like U-turn and Steadfast: A Ministry of Restoration in Temecula. Realizing that he needed to be further equipped for ministry, Bobby began taking classes at CCBC in nearby Murrieta, completing his Associates Degree in 2014.

Three years after completing his Associates Degree Bobby was considering how to go about completing a Bachelors degree, when he saw an advertisement on Facebook for Calvary Chapel University. Because of CCU’s agreements with CCBC he was able to receive a discount and in 2019 Bobby completed his B.A. in Biblical Studies with an overall GPA of 4.05!

The opportunity for higher education that was squandered early on due to addiction had been redeemed through his time at Calvary Chapel University!

What an amazing story to see the Lord restoring hopes and dreams that we thought were broken, dead or gone and breathing new life into them! Bobby is a great example of the opportunity that Calvary Chapel University offers to people who can’t relocate to a physical campus, but have a strong desire to be strengthened in their faith and equipped for ministry!

When asked what he would tell someone considering Calvary Chapel University Bobby said “Go for it! It was a task juggling a career and ministry and classes…but it was so worth it! So much of it poured into what I was learning and teaching at the time and to have that Bachelors degree at the end was awesome!”

More about the CCBC World Study Tour

To see hundreds of young people each year personally involved on the foreign mission field, studying the Scriptures daily, and purposefully seeing the world and its needs as Jesus does. We desire to disciple the youth through having a meaningful relationship with Jesus the Messiah and help them develop a burning passion to reach the lost in every corner of the globe.

The vision is to offer a one-year CCBC World Study Tour Certificate of Completion program, on the road, allowing English-speaking students to study at six or more of our international campuses within a twelve-month period, and acquire experience in cross-cultural evangelism, missions, and language learning in various parts of the world.

How would this work? The students will study from six to ten weeks at a time at a Bible college in several different countries, while assisting in the international outreaches of each campus. They will be visiting and serving in as many as fifteen countries during their twelve-month study tour. Included in the study tour is a two-week Bible lands visit to Israel and Jordan.

This unique program will provide the students exposure to many different styles of ministry and leadership, hopefully giving them a passion for a specific campus or people group to return as future missionaries, teachers, youth workers, and church planters.

CCU Doctoral Student Byron Barrett Ministering To Protesters In Hong Kong

December 4, 2019 by Deven Berryhill

From Byron Barret: December 2019

CCU Doctoral Student, Missionary To China

We have had protests in Hong Kong that have turned violent. In a previous update, I made a comment that they are slowing. On the contrary, last week we had some of the most extremes of demonstrations. A couple of the university campuses had become ground zero for clashes between demonstrators and police. The campuses were vandalized, and the public transport system was disrupted.

With the disruption of transport, I have been scrambling for transport to and from work; waking up early, walking more and praying more for Hong Kong.

The other morning while making my trek I found the bus terminus in Sheung Shui along with the area destroyed from a night of vandalism. The streets were covered with guard railings, boulders, and bricks that were taken up from the walkways. It was troublesome for the traffic to move around the area.

I decided that I would not make it to work and began my walk back home. On the way back, some of the local residents were cleaning up the mess. I did what any good Samaritan would do, I joined them.  We began kicking the bricks to the side of the road, rolling boulders and lifting the heavy guardrails out of the way. I guessed it to be at least a quarter-mile of mess on both sides of the road. It was amazing to see more and more people join us as we neared the end of our task.

As I was leaving a small group of young protesters had been watching us. For some reason, they did not challenge us or come to stop us. We must have had angels surrounding us or the sight of an extra-large size American helping may have steered away from any thoughts they may have had of stopping the clean-up. I like to stick with the fact that our protection comes from God. The situation is serious, recently a man had been killed for arguing with the protesters in this same area. Praise the Lord, our duty was accomplished with no hindrance. I was amazed at what we accomplished with some caring residence and hard work.

While making my way home I was approached by a young man in his early twenties. He was one of the protesters, one of the people who made the mess we just cleaned up. He was so interested in me. Why did you clean up, who are you, what are you doing here? He was filled with questions. Obviously, I had his attention. Because of the violence going on I gave him a pat-down before I continued my talk with him. I asked him about his home life if he is being loved at home. He said he is being taken care of but not really shown love or have any expression of affection in the home. No hugs, no affirmations, or “I love you” while heading out the door for school. I told him that I love him, I care about him and concerned for him and the others that have been warring. Right there and then I gave him a hug and invited him to have a coffee with me.

It was more than just coffee; I spent a couple of hours with him sharing my life story and how God intervened in my life. God’s love, grace, and mercy through Christ is the major point of change in my life. I told him that Jesus died for everyone that we may all inherit eternity. He listened and listened and listened. I laid hands on him praying for him. He told me he had attended a Christian primary school. I made sure he knew that his curiosity in me helping to clean up was the spirit of the living God drawing him back. It was an amazing moment, and I believe that God is moving in this time of turmoil. It is time for the believers in Christ to rise up, do the work of an evangelist and engage in the ministry God has for us. Please pray for the young man that I met, believing that God’s work in his heart will continue.

Please pray for my protection as God has used me more than once in these situations. Pray that I use God’s wisdom and judgment as I go around Hong Kong. Also, pray for us as we have been passing out Chinese gospel tracks in the Sheung Shui and Fanling area.

We are pleased to be writing to you to highlight God’s faithfulness, filled with gratefulness for your prayers, especially during these troubled times here in Hong Kong. From the headlines in the news lately, I can see that Hong Kong is not the only one experiencing troubled times. Peace has become the world’s fight.

This Bible verse comes to mind in Luke 12:29 – 30

And seek not ye what ye shall eat, or what ye shall drink, neither be ye of doubtful mind. For all these things do the nations of the world seek after and your Father knoweth that ye need these things.

In other words, do not worry your father knows what you need.
